Cherry shoji screens with Warlon Acrylic sheeting material for a bathroom wall / sliding door (above) and for the commode room (below). Above there are two fixed panels with one sliding; notice the difference in the upper rails. The upper rail height was increased on the fixed shoji so the horizontal kumiko aligned. These shoji will be installed on a short rise.

Below, since these shoji are in the same room, the lower door rail height was increased so the horizontal kumiko aligned with the fixed/sliding shoji. There were three different shoji heights in this one area so a bit tricky to work out...

Eight tea house shoji in Port Orford Cedar with Warlon Acrylic inserts. There are two different sized openings and Ed was able to get the horizontal kumiko to align across all. The effect, when the shoji meet in the corners on either side of the posts, will be balanced.

'Growler' Proofing

Meet Growler. We replaced the paper inserts and added kumiko to the bottom of these four shoji screens in hopes that Growler would not be able to dent the paper anymore. He apparently kept 'bumping' into the bottom of the shoji during his daily exercise routine.

For an opening between the kitchen and dining room, this shoji will be fixed in a floor to ceiling wall opening to provide light. Shoji size is 35" x 106" tall. Custom kumiko pattern and custom stain color with 2.0 mm Warlon Acrylic insert material.

Four shoji, only two pictured, to act as an office room divider. Shoji to span 15 feet with each shoji approximately 45" x 95" tall. Built all in Cherry with 0.45 mm White Warlon insert material and ebony inlaid door pulls.

A shoji to cover the lower half of a window, 94" wide by 21" tall. The shoji installs with single wood tracking so it can be removed to clean when needed. The client wanted the Fibonacci kumiko pattern turned on it's side. Challenging but workable.

Cherry shoji with cherry kumiko and 0.3 mm White Warlon paper. These shoji will install floor to ceiling with bi-fold tracking. The upper rail is thicker to cover the upper arch of the opening. The open kumiko grid is to allow circulation for the HVAC system in the condo.

The hinged closet shoji for Terry's room. This pattern requires 7 different specifically cut kumiko pieces so when you're assembling you have 4 vertical kumiko stacks and 3 horizontal kumiko stacks to keep track of. It's easy to create something new and different and entirely not what you want. And then you build the back! Assembly table pictured below.

Anytime a kumiko pattern has a free floating ends the tips must be detail beveled. Here is a shot of the 'lion trimmer' with a pile of nibbled ends, the kumiko are trimmed before stain. And a length of kumiko with a close-up of the beveled end.

We often get requests for black satin stain so I wanted to show the two options available. The first shoji have both both the frame and kumiko stained black.

This second image has only the shoji frame stained black with the kumiko left natural cedar.

Sometimes it's fun to mix it up a bit.

Warlon Tough Top.

We have a new product! The advertising photo for Tough Top in the Warlon catalog is so fun I wanted to give it some air time. Warlon states Tough Top has a 'general shoji strength 4 times that of paper. (and my favorite) Dusting and mischief of child all right.'

This paper will tear from the edge though once in a shoji frame that would not be a concern. The information from our product catalog states that if it is dented it will come back to flat with a little heat. Tough Top will also adhere to kumiko with wheat paste or glue so is like traditional Japanese paper without the ability to poke a hole in it with your finger.

Here are the 'working' instructions from the catalog.

Visually, Tough Top is a white, fairly opaque paper with visible paper fibers apparent on one side. It seems to have a front and a back though the difference is subtle.

Beech shoji with a SW Fruitwood stain on the frames with Port Orford Cedar Kumiko in our Fibonacci sequence kumiko pattern.

The overall pattern is a Fibonacci series (1,1,2,3,5,8 ...), and various sections of the pattern show Golden Rectangles (1-1.618), squares and various other pleasing geometric proportions.

Yes, we actually think about this while laying out a kumiko screen design!

At 107-1/2" these are possibly the tallest kumiko we've built since these shoji do not have an intermediate rail or lower panel. Also right up there with one of the longest valances at 13'.

I'm editing this post since it lacked a bit of information. The shoji on the left will be a fixed panel that will be installed in a wall opening.

The 10 shoji on the right cover a wall of glass windows and doors and there are 5 wider shoji stacked behind them for a kitchen room divider. I'm excited to get pictures of this install.

We really liked the color contrast of the kumiko left natural with the stained frames.

I really enjoy receiving happy notes from happy clients (don't we all?) but this one made me laugh out loud. A very nice note for sure.

The Shoji arrived on Monday. As I checked the crate for possible damage I thought, “If the screens are damaged inside this thing, I’d hate to see the other guy.”

Unpacking the crate was a snap. I brought the screens upstairs in just the interior packaging, which made it easy even with them still protected.

I opened the package and “Viola, they’re beautiful!” I wanted to get them hung right away to see how they’d look in place. Then I thought, “Oh no, no directions. (Oops!) But it quickly became evident that none are needed. The track and roller system on which they hang is really well designed and easy to install. Attaching or removing the screens is a snap.

The screens glide with incredible smoothness. And the look great! Thanks for the high quality product. They’re outstanding in design, fit and finish, ease of installation, and effortless operation.

A new style

We've worked up a new kumiko style for a project and I thought I'd share. There's two sets of shoji doors in the room and one set is not a good width for the requested kumiko pattern. Some kumiko styles are very height / width proportion specific. Ed wanted to keep the horizontal elements consistent given the close proximity of these shoji so he worked up an interesting alternative. Should be an interesting one to build also.

That fancy kumiko pattern we came up with after seeing a vintage six panel Japanese screen in an antique store in Port Townsend WA. What we came up with wasn't nearly as complex as that old Japanese screen but we tried to do it justice.
