Cherry Shoji Screens with Kinwashi paper, Cherry panels and our pattern #20

Note the panel grain is perfectly centered. Note the ebony pull falls center between the horizontal kumiko. The one that is not there!  Let the eye traverse left to the last square and it becomes apparent.

Gorgeous silky cherry panel.

This is a hidden tapered half lap joint, for maximum strength ,  leaving the outside of the joint to show unbroken smooth grain.

Trade secret- how we clamp- a few left over wood slats  and some softwood wedges. Sometimes ancient simplicity is best. Strong, light, and makes good kindling when job is done!

Wallingford

. "Rising moon with clouds over water."
 Sapele, Amber Warlon acrylic.

The moon is a slightly lighter wood, the "ocean" is  a Fibonacci series- 1,2,3,5...
And Ed got creative with the joinery.. see detail images following. Shoji panel size is 38-1/2" w x 40-1/2" h. This is a fixed panel designed to be back lit for a night light.

This is how we finish the ends of unsupported kumiko- a nice clean bevel- the piece is about the size of a pencil

The closet pair of shoji.

This is an open kumiko (grid) screen, no paper, to go over a white glass wall -we took the picture on a piece of white cardboard.

Detail of  this single sided kumiko.

Japanese cherry pull in a beech screen.

A satin nickel edge pull, for getting a pocket door out of the pocket.
