Herring Homes

Two LARGE Shoji screens for a double pocket door opening. 

For comparison, the blue tape indicates a normal 80" door height. 

 These Shoji are 48" wide and 100" tall. Careful attention to proportions resulted in these large  Shoji screens having a pleasing balanced look.

 They are made from European Beech, with 2 mm white Warlon acrylic, Beech lower door panels, large inlaid Ebony pulls and brushed nickel edge pulls. (pictured below)

Coincidentally, the first two orders to be completed in the shop after Ed's sabbatical both had the same kumiko pattern. One order will have the shoji screens hanging in space as room dividers.. I'll include the picture our client sent. The other shoji screen is a window insert I believe.

Drat! Our camera's lens has dirt on the inside! With these new digital cameras... how does one get in to clean it? If you see shadows.. it's the camera not the shoji.

Oh, and here's that picture our client sent us... nice space there.

COi

Custom folding shoji screen as a room divider for an office. Built in Cherry with 2 mm Amber Warlon Acrylic. This was built as a flexible use screen, able to be moved around based on office layout and privacy needs.  We use a very high grade stainless steel double acting hinge,so each panel can be folded forward or backwards. 

This shoji had to compliment the other sliding shoji screens we'd made for this client previously. Notice how much paler the new cherry is compared to the year old shoji screens. It will take a month or so and the new wood will 'cherry up' as one client put it.

The lower shoji panels, hence mid-rails, are about the same height from the floor to aid the shoji complimenting each other.

A nice detail, the horizontal kumiko end on the vertical kumiko cleanly, with no joinery cut visible from the side.

The tapered half lap joint used to get that clean outer edge. The full half lap shown in the rear is used when the kumiko form a full cross.

Nelson

Beech shoji to span 120" x 80" with beech lower panels, 0.3 mm Opaque White Warlon paper and inlaid Japanese Cherry door pulls.

Fujita

Beech shoji with Port Orford Cedar kumiko for a fixed window, a skylight and a loft area. All but one of the shoij has Amber Warlon paper.

The skylight shoji has 2.0 mm Amber Warlon Acrylic.

Shoji Surprise

Stained Beech shoji screens with 2.0 mm White Warlon Acrylic insert material and inlaid Ebony door pulls. These are 94-3/4" tall, standard height shoji are slightly visible on the right side of the picture for a comparison. Bedroom doors for a surface mount track.These are a surprise for our client's wife.

Whaley

Beech Shoji screens with Beech lower door panels, kumiko pattern #6 and 0.3 mm Opaque White Warlon Paper. The two middle Shoji doors are fixed and the two outside Shoji are the bathroom and the laundry room entry doors. A very elegant pattern, each horizontal section within the kumiko is the same size as the panel.

We took these photos to show some of the things we think sets our shoji shop apart. The wall  has a 1" recess where the fixed shoji go (the middle ones in the photo above), and that created quite the install challenge since the shoji are 1 3/8" thick! We had to make some special trim parts.

This is the wood blocking that supports the aluminum upper tracking. In this photo the parts are laid flat, That black screw holds the assembly to the wall. The groove in the wood blocking or 'beam' makes it easier to install as the screw can go anywhere there is blocking in the wall, no need to countersink for the screw head- easy peasy!

This shows the "french cleat" (the interlocking metal clips) used to attach the valance to the track mounting block. This allows easy install and removal of the valance.

This is the mitered return on the valance, it returns back to the wall.

These are specially cut jambs for this job.

Shoji install with ranma (or upper fixed shoji)

Quick shoji install pictures taken with a phone actually. Here's a link to the shoji mock-ups we did to narrow down what the clients were looking for. The contractor sent us these photos before all the trim was installed. These shoji are somewhere in Pittsburgh, PA.

Florida Shoji install

 We received a really nice note with a link to a client's photo tour of their new place. They were inspired by this shoji screen install in our portfolio and incorporated that idea into their plan. Here are some of the pictures they sent.
