Fleck

Custom Beech shoji screens with 2.0 mm White Warlon Acrylic, Ebony inlaid door pulls and edge pulls. These are the shoji pictured in drawing form on this page. They are to span a wall with two door openings. A fixed shoji creates a pocket that the three sliding shoji store in. Another fixed shoji covers a small bit of wall area to complete the look.
One of the two sliding shoji for the widest door opening, they are each 50" wide. We didn't have the free wall space to show them both at the same time.
The fixed shoji that creates the pocket. It has taller door stiles to help 'fix' it in place inside the soffit.
The second doorway shoji with the fixed shoji panel it will close against. I altered the pattern to work with the whole and look well in this narrow panel.

With a job like this there are many bits needed for install. And of course extremely stout crates to get the whole thing shipped across country in one piece.

Campbell

Three closet shoji (only two pictured) in beech, stained a dark cherry color, with natural beech kumiko, 0.3mm opaque white Warlon paper and inlaid ebony door pulls. Approximately shoji size is 43" x 84".

Here's a close-up showing the nice color contrast between the stained frames and natural beech kumiko.

Custom Kumiko Two

A different client sent us a drawing of what he had in mind for the kumiko his shoji and I translated it into this pattern which he was pleased with.

This order is not in production yet, I'll post some process pictures once it is.

Custom Kumiko Pattern

We're working on a set of shoji that need to span 209" of doorway and wall space where each section is a different width. The kumiko pattern our client choose needed to be customized to look pleasing across that many differently proportioned shoji.

The first image is from inside the room. The fixed shoji are represented with lighter frames. The one large fixed shoji panel will form a pocket that the three sliding shoji store behind.

Here's what that wall of shoji will look like from the other side.

And here's the stack of kumiko frames piling up. The frames are resting against kumiko for a different job, I like the way they look all stacked up without the laminated paper installed.

This month flew

and I've been tardy at putting images on this blog so here are a few shoji for the month.

Cherry shoji with Port Orford Cedar kumiko and Warlon Amber Acrylic insert material. They are pocket doors so have wider stiles on the pocket side with inlaid edge pulls and door pulls. This is the second order from this client.. so nice .

These shoji are unfinished Port Orford Cedar with Port Orford Cedar kumiko for window shoji. They will be near each other so the horizontal kumiko needed to align even with the difference in heights.

Beech shoji, frames and kumiko, with Warlon Acrylic insert material and wood tracking for an outdoor barbeque area. They'll be finished for outdoor duty on-site.

Hurricane Sandy

So far news from friends and family back east has been good but so so many were not as lucky. I'm looking for ways to help and thought I'd share what I found.

Craig Newmark, of Craigslist, has put together a resource page for people looking for ways to help with disaster relief - http://www.crowdrise.com/sandyrelief .

American Red Cross - http://www.redcross.org/

You can check up on the charity of your choice using the Charity Navigator - http://www.charitynavigator.org/ . Not all charities will be listed but they do an admirable job of collating the information.

For area residents looking to volunteer - this Huffington Post page has what looks like a Twitter feed with schools and other organizations looking for help. Also noted are resources for people needing a place to stay.

Another Huffington Post page with information about FEMA programs and contact numbers.
