Three shoji screens to span 108" wide opening. Built in Maple with a Sapele 'moon' and Sapele bottom door panels. Each shoji is 37-3/8" x 88-5/8". The pictures don't do these justice - so pretty in person. We worked with our client on the kumiko pattern. 

Frances did a wonderful job on the layout, note how the lower kumiko lead the eye to a "horizon" where the  moon quietly sets.

We are much better at making shoji than taking photo's-

those Sapele panels have a ribbon grain and absolutely glow with reflective beauty.

Praise the tree, we had nothing to do with that!

This is a better color example. Pencil for scale. We try to keep the joints tight!

 

 

All our free floating kumiko ends are beveled to finish them off cleanly.

Osborne

 

 

Beautiful little shoji screens built in Beech with 1 mm bamboo Warlon and our K20 pattern.

These are pocket shoji, so the outer stiles are 1/2" wider to go into the pocket and make sure no gap shows. The darker backdrop, pictured below, really pops the bamboo pattern.

(The change in shoji wood color is due to the camera compensating

for a different background tone.)

 

 

 

 

The horizontal kumiko that end on a vertical kumiko are angle cut

so the join is not visible from the side.

 

 

 

Wood clamps and wedges hold the join

together while the glue dries.

 

 

This is the kumiko/insert sandwich - Spacers are cut from cardboard  to align the upper and lower kumiko grids during assembly or the vertical kumiko will not align properly.

Sapele shoji screens with our K16 (a Fibonacci based kumiko pattern), 1 mm Warlon laminated paper and inlaid Ebony door pulls. Span is 114".

Cherry Shoji screens to span 131-3/4" x 98-1/8". Each shoji screen is 34-3/8" x 94" x 1-3/8". Kumiko pattern #14 with 0.45 Opaque White Warlon laminated paper, Cherry lower door panels and Japanese Cherry inlaid door pulls.

Japanese Cherry is a lighter wood tone than American Cherry.

Three of eight shoji screens to create a light wall - 286" by 96".

Shoji built in Cherry with 0.3 mm White Warlon laminated paper.
