A lovely Sapele shoji screen in our pattern 18 with Warlon “waterfall” paper.

We put a darker background here on the right, to show the paper fibers better.

And a closeup. The end of every kumiko piece is carefully beveled.

The sapele has a beautiful silky ribbon grain.

The pull, carefully cut into the frame.

These photo’s show the track mounting ledger (the light-colored board) the track, and the Sapele valance with a mitered end to wrap around to the wall. The other end will terminate into a perpendicular wall. (all these photo’s are inverted as the parts are laying on a table.) Note the metal “French cleats”, after the tracking is mounted the valance will simply clip on with no screws or nails.

Maple shoji screens with Maple lower door panels and Chiri Warlon insert material.
The shoji are 35-3/8" x 95" x 1-3/8".
A centered book match on the panels, and a nicely proportionate Kumiko grid above. The panel height matches the adjacent countertop. The "Chiri" warlon is a rustic paper, with various inclusions of bark and straw.
Note the photo was taken with the left shoji having white cardboard behind, the right shoji has brown.  Chiri paper is good at concealing the darker background, and it is very effective at covering an un-lit space, like a closet or powder room, for this reason.

These are tall shoji, floor to ceiling, with a recessed ceiling track. Elvis for scale, he is 6' tall.

The book matched lower maple panels.

We spent some time developing fixtures to cut in these pulls super cleanly!

Huang

Beech shoji screens for a closet, span is 71". Shoji built in Beech with Kinwashi Warlon, Beech lower door panels and inlaid Cherry door pulls.

Elvis stepped in for scale, he is 6 ft tall.

Bauz

Beech shoji screens for a closet - span is 42" x 79" - with lower door panels for puppy proofing and opaque white Warlon since that appears brighter when used in a closet. Less gray than a more translucent Warlon

Wright Construction

Shoji screens built in Beech with 1 mm opaque white Warlon and milled inset door pulls. There are 17 shoji pictured which will install as closet doors and room dividers for a new home. Elvis stepped in for scale in the picture below, he is 6 ft tall.

Three sliding shoji doors for one wall of tatami room, span is 87-3/8". The shoji pocket door is for an adjacent wall. Shoji screens built in Beech with 1.0mm Warlon, Beech lower door panels and inlaid Japanese Cherry door pulls.

Client Install

 

Maple shoji screens for a tatami room. This was a tricky install due to the beam across the ceiling. The contractor installed a header and frame work to support the weight of the shoji. We made each pair of shoji a slightly different width so they would line up well with the shelving vertical dividers. 

Duncan

Shoji screens built in Beech with white Warlon insert material. These are installed in tracks in front of window walls and a sliding glass door. There are 17 shoji doors in all so we didn't have the room to lay them out for a picture. You can see the stack below.

 

The shoji doors installed with upper wood tracking and bottom rail door rollers with floor channel from Sugatsune. 

The shoji needed to go to Idaho and since crating this many shoji takes alot of material and effort, we delivered. We needed a break from the shop anyway. Ed built a surround in the back of the van so we could stack them securely and be sure they'd stay in place. Our clients graciously let us stay with them and took good care of us.
We must have been tired since we both totally forgot to get a picture.

Sletta Construction

Shoji screens in Maple for a closet, built using Amber Warlon with a custom kumiko pattern. Span is 137-1/2" x 96-3/4". A challenge to photograph in our limited space with shop lighting. They are beautiful in person.

DeLong

A beautiful set of shoji- made in Sapele, with white Warlon paper. Our shop lighting does not do these justice. And no photo can provide the silky feel these have.

Lovely Sapele bottom panels- the light will dance across these. 

 The pulls were cut directly into the wood.

This is an example of our precise joinery, penny is for scale.

Buch

Shoji screens built in Beech with Beech lower door panels and 1 mm White Warlon. This stack of 8 shoji - two are already packaged - will be used to close off the patio sliding glass doors. Elvis stepped in for scale, he is 6 feet tall.

There are also 4 shoji screens for the closet areas.

The shoji screens were packaged two together and loaded into crates.
That makes it easier to handle once delivered.
Crates shown below, the reason they are so expensive to build-
they need to be stout to protect the shoji in transit.

Joslen

Shoji screens built in Maple with White Warlon and inlaid Japanese Cherry door pulls.
Span is 60-1/2" x 95". These are hallway doors.
