Something a bit different, designed for a window opening by our client.

The proportions worked out really well.

As usual, Elvis stepped in for scale, he is 6 ft tall. Shoji size is 33" x 75-9/16" x 1-3/8".

 

This shows the detail of our tapered half lap joinery. This is the backside of the joint.

Note in the photo below how the joint is hidden.

Roberts

 Beech shoji screens to span a 144-1/2" doorway, sliding into a double pocket when open.

We only had room to set up two of the doors. These will be joined to make one large shoji.

Each pair of shoji will be joined to function as one sliding door using the hardware pictured above. The picture below is of the joinery strap at the top of the shoji. These pictures are from a different order which is why the wood (Cherry not Beech) is different. Client has their own tracking. Pictures of Rockridge on the portfolio page.

 

Bolles

 

Shoji screens built in Cherry with Chiri Warlon laminated paper and Ebony door pulls.
Shoji span is 98-1/2" x 96" to be used as a room divider.

Featherstone

 

 

Beech shoji screens for an upstairs loft area. Built using Waterfall Warlon laminated paper and inlaid Japanese Cherry door pulls. Span is 100-1/2" x 43-1/2".

Waterfall Warlon which is a new one we are stocking for shoji. The darker background shows the pattern better. Detail picture below.

 

Above head shoji installed with wood tracking get a special treatment. Simple screws with corresponding recesses in the upper tracking only allow the shoji to install at one point along the tracking. The screws fill in the gap between the top of the shoji and the upper tracking groove so the shoji can't be nudged and fall out.

Cherry shoji screens with Sapele lower door panels and Kinwashi Warlon laminated paper. The pattern is what I call Mona Pearl's moon since I think she was the first person we built  this style for. Actually the first was a smaller version that you can see here.

 

As usual, Elvis stepped in for scale. He is 6' tall. The shoji are to span 116" less side jambs. Each shoji is 40" x 80" x 1-3/8"

Pan Mather

 

Shoji window screens built in Beech to span 143-1/2" x 45-1/4" - there are 4 shoji but we only had room to display 2. They will be installed on a second story half wall to close off a bedroom. The screws at top create a simple lock to keep the shoji from coming out of their tracking when bumped. Below Elvis stepped in for scale, he is 6 feet tall.

 

Barnes

Shoji screens for a double pocket.Built in Beech with Chiri Warlon insert material
Span is 60" - each shoji is 31-1/4" x 84-3/4" x 1-3/8"

Shown here with the small shoji panels that will be installed in a doorway close to the pocket shoji and will be hinged.
