Custom Beech Shoji Screen Window size
Shoji window screens built in Beech to span 143-1/2" x 45-1/4" - there are 4 shoji but we only had room to display 2. They will be installed on a second story half wall to close off a bedroom. The screws at top create a simple lock to keep the shoji from coming out of their tracking when bumped. Below Elvis stepped in for scale, he is 6 feet tall.

Client install - MN

Custom Shoji Screens
Remodel complete - our client was kind enough to send pictures of his Shoji screens installed. I really like the different wood tones in the room and how they complement each other.

A set of striking Sapele (sometimes called African mahogany) shoji screens with white Warlon paper, Sapele lower door panels and inlaid ebony pulls. We designed the kumiko pattern so the corner squares are 1-1, the panel 3-1, the tall rectangles 1-2 and the proportions are reflected when multiple sections are combined. All this goes under the radar when just gazing at the shoji screens, but it is an important part of a harmonious appearance.

Tarrant

Three of four screens to span a wall closet, special lighting from the back will really make these delicious!  Beech frames, Port Orford kumiko, 0.3 white Warlon paper and beautiful, matched ribbon stripe Sapele panels. The look is quiet, elegant, and powerful.

We spend a lot of effort to make sure our shoji have pleasing proportions, we do not "cookie cutter" them. Each screen is looked at and proportions adjusted to be as harmonious as possible. We use various geometric ratios, sometimes 1-2 or 3-1 etc. and on occasion the golden section (1-1.618) or even the Fibonacci series (1-1-2-3-5-8 etc.).  Some shoji work up easier than others, these screens practically fell together.

These shoji screens are 1-2  ratio overall  (half as wide as they are tall).
The panel is 3-1. The panel height is one sixth of the screen height, six kumiko rectangles equal the wood panel in size.
And the kumiko grid is 2-1, same proportion as the entire shoji, tipped on it's side.
All of this is subliminal, but results in relaxed and pleasing proportions.

Wampler & Sons

Beech shoji screens with 0.45 White Warlon laminated paper and inlaid Ebony door pulls.

The wood ledger, track and valance assembly.  The ledger screws to the wall , the screw heads will be inside the groove shown in the ledger. Then the valance clips to the ledger with the metal "french cleats". The end of the valance is mitered to return to the wall and cover the end of the ledger and track.   A neat clean system for a barn door type tracking ,where the shoji side over a wall face.

The assembly all together, viewed from the underside.

Shoji pocket doors built in Beech with Cedar kumiko, 0.3 mm Kinwashi Warlon paper and inlaid Japanese Cherry door pulls.

Two of the six other shoji screens that fill out this order.
We did not have enough room to spread them out for a picture.

To protect them in their journey, a very stout crate built with 3/4" thick plywood.

Custom Shoji screens built in Cherry with 0.3 mm White Warlon laminated paper and inlaid Ebony door pulls. The kumiko (grid) pattern is a ratio of 3:1 which is why there's so many horizontal elements. Many little sticks in this pattern.

Lang

Five custom shoji screens which will be used on an upstairs half wall to provide interest and a bit of separation. These were built to match similar shoji screens we made for this client a few years ago. Built in Beech with beech kumiko and 2 mm white Warlon Acrylic shoji material.

Pictures below are a few from the previous jobs we've done for this client. A big Thank You to them and Juanitta for having the patience to wait for Ed to get back into the shop.

Squares!

Coincidentally, the first two orders to be completed in the shop after Ed's sabbatical both had the same kumiko pattern. One order will have the shoji screens hanging in space as room dividers.. I'll include the picture our client sent. The other shoji screen is a window insert I believe.

Thank you to both clients for their patience waiting for Ed to return.

The shoji screens pictured above are built in Beech with Cedar kumiko and Amber Kinwashi Warlon shoji paper. The shoji screen below has White Warlon shoji paper.

Drat! Our camera's lens has dirt on the inside! With these new digital cameras... how does one get in to clean it? If you see shadows.. it's the camera not the shoji.

Oh, and here's that picture our client sent us... nice space there.
