Veteze Bush

 

Two pocket door shoji screens made from Sapele, in our pattern 20, with a panel. Ebony pulls and opaque white Warlon paper. Size 30" x 80" x 1-3/8".

We hand pick all our wood. Every stick of it. And sometimes, there are a few pieces in the stack that are really exceptional though usually there is  not enough to fill out a whole order.  We buy it anyway- never can tell. On this job, there was just enough - the wood is an African "mahogany". These boards have a beautiful rippled grain that really catches the light, some parts look like water at a full boil, sort of bubbly. A more typical grain for Sapele is the ribbon stripe figure in the panels, pictured below. Really a lovely set of shoji.

An order of 5 Shoji screens built in Sapele with 1 mm White Warlon, Sapele lower door panels and inlaid Ebony door pulls. They're all tall (Elvis is 6 feet) and and all tracking install types are represented in this order; two are header mounted, one is a surface mounted and the other two are pocket doors.

Huebner

Aldworth

 

A lovely set of doors in Sapele with white 2.0mm Warlon acrylic insert material. 

These were photographed on a white background, the small screen in front clearly shows the amount of translucence of the acrylic. 

Elvis had another gig, so he was unable to provide scale- the tall doors are a bit over 7'.

 

These are for a pocket application, the inner door stiles are wider, so when the shoji door is closed there is the same reveal all around, with 3/4" hidden in the pocket. 

This shows the beautiful ribbon grain of the Sapele.

Sessions

Sapele Shoji screens for a closet with one of our custom kumiko patterns and 0.3 mm Kinwashi Warlon laminated paper. Span is 120" x 81-1/2".

Blunt Kumiko ends are beveled for a nicer finish.

Hughes

A set of striking Sapele (sometimes called African mahogany) shoji screens with white Warlon paper, Sapele lower door panels and inlaid ebony pulls. We designed the kumiko pattern so the corner squares are 1-1, the panel 3-1, the tall rectangles 1-2 and the proportions are reflected when multiple sections are combined. All this goes under the radar when just gazing at the shoji screens, but it is an important part of a harmonious appearance.

Tarrant

Three of four screens to span a wall closet, special lighting from the back will really make these delicious!  Beech frames, Port Orford kumiko, 0.3 white Warlon paper and beautiful, matched ribbon stripe Sapele panels. The look is quiet, elegant, and powerful.

We spend a lot of effort to make sure our shoji have pleasing proportions, we do not "cookie cutter" them. Each screen is looked at and proportions adjusted to be as harmonious as possible. We use various geometric ratios, sometimes 1-2 or 3-1 etc. and on occasion the golden section (1-1.618) or even the Fibonacci series (1-1-2-3-5-8 etc.).  Some shoji work up easier than others, these screens practically fell together.

These shoji screens are 1-2  ratio overall  (half as wide as they are tall).
The panel is 3-1. The panel height is one sixth of the screen height, six kumiko rectangles equal the wood panel in size.
And the kumiko grid is 2-1, same proportion as the entire shoji, tipped on it's side.
All of this is subliminal, but results in relaxed and pleasing proportions.

Honolulu bound

Custom shoji screens built of Sapele to offer privacy over a wall of sliding glass doors. One of the requirements was air flow hence the open upper and lower kumiko (the blue is supposed to be sky and the green grass - to show they are open grids). The shoji on the left, in the drawing, has a Sapele panel instead of the Warlon Acrylic insert material. This and two other shoji panels will create a closet, of sorts, to store the glass sliding doors.

We didn't have space in the shop to lay out all the shoji for a picture.
